Pumpkin Life Cycle Activities for Kids
Fall is a fun time to sneak in some simple science activities, and pumpkins make it pretty easy!
I pulled out these pumpkin life cycle activities for Ella, and she worked through several of the pages at the table. We talked about the different stages of a pumpkin as she worked on the activities.
The activity set has a few different ways for kids to practice the pumpkin life cycle.
One of the activities has kids cut out and sequence the stages of a pumpkin's life cycle. They put the pictures in order, starting with the seed and working their way through the different stages until they get to the pumpkin.
There’s also a matching worksheet where kids match the life cycle words with the correct pictures.
The vocabulary words include:
seed
planted
sprout
flower
green pumpkin
pumpkin
Ella worked on the matching page with a purple marker, and you can see some of her very serious concentration in these pictures. 😂
How We Used the Pumpkin Life Cycle Activities
We started with the life cycle pieces and talked through what happens as a pumpkin grows. Ella could move the pieces around and figure out what came next.
Then she worked on the matching page. This gave us another chance to talk about the vocabulary as she worked. We talked about the different pictures and connected the words with each stage of the pumpkin's growth.
I like that the activities don't have to be done all at once. You could work on one page one day and come back to another activity later in the week.
The set also includes a little pumpkin life cycle mini book. Kids can color, cut, and put the pages together to make their own little book about how a pumpkin grows.
There are also pumpkin life cycle vocabulary cards that can be used along with the activities or just kept out for kids to look at while you're talking about the different stages.
These would also work well in a classroom during a pumpkin or fall science unit. The vocabulary cards could be used for review, the sequencing activity gives kids a hands-on way to practice the order of the life cycle, and the mini book gives them something to take home when they're finished.
Pumpkin Life Cycle Activities for Fall
If you're already doing pumpkin activities this fall, these are an easy way to add some science into the mix.
They're designed for preschool, kindergarten, and first grade, and you can use the different activities together or spread them out over several days.
I put all of these activities together in one printable resource, including the sequencing activity, matching worksheet, mini book, and vocabulary cards. There are color and black-and-white versions included as well.
