Halloween STEM Activities for 2nd-4th Grade

 
 

I’ve always loved bringing fun, silly, seasonal activities into my classroom. But I also know that just because something is fun doesn’t mean it can’t have some real learning behind it! So if you’re looking for a way to make STEM a little more exciting during the Halloween season, you’re in the right place!

Halloween is such a fun time to bring some extra creativity into the classroom, and STEM challenges are a perfect way to do it.  I’ve rounded up four Halloween STEM challenges that are perfect for 2nd-4th grade.  Your students can design a pumpkin transporter, build a bridge for a monster to cross, protect a witch’s precious potion, and create a vehicle to deliver supplies to a zombie.

These challenges are fun, hands on, and just the right amount of spooky!

Pumpkin Transporter STEM Challenge

What happens when a monster needs to get a pumpkin from one place to another… but can’t carry it? Your students get to solve the problem!

 
 

In this Halloween engineering challenge, students must design and build a vehicle that can safely transport a pumpkin from one location to another. They’ll need to think about how their vehicle will move, how they’ll keep the pumpkin from falling out, and how they can make their design work with the materials available.

For a simple version of this challenge, you could provide students with materials like cardboard, craft sticks, straws, tape, and bottle caps and let them decide how to build their vehicle.  You can also choose what to use as “pumpkins”. You can use orange pom poms, cotton balls, small plastic pumpkins, or ping pong balls. Give them a starting point and a destination, and let them test their designs and see what happens!

The real learning happens when things don’t work perfectly the first time. Encourage students to look at their results, identify problems with their design, and make changes before testing again.

Ghost Bridge STEM Challenge

 
 

Our friendly monster has been hired to lead a spooky ghost tour through the forest… but unfortunately, a deep, creepy swamp is blocking the path.  And our monster can’t swim! In this STEM challenge, your students must design and build a bridge that will help the monster safely cross the swamp. The bridge should span the gap between two designated points, remain in place without being held, and support a “monster” without collapsing.

For this challenge, you’ll want to provide students with materials such as craft sticks, tape, paper, cardboard, and cups or other supports. Challenge them to create a bridge that spans the gap and can support a small object.

While they design and build, students will have to think about what will make their bridge strong and stable. They’ll need to experiment with how they arrange their materials and figure out how to build the strongest bridge they can with the materials they have.

The first bridge your students build might sag, tip over, collapse, or not span the entire gap.  That’s okay! Encourage your students to test the bridge, figure out what went wrong, make one or more changes, and test again.

Potion Protector STEM Challenge

 
 

In this STEM challenge, our monster has been tasked with helping a witch deliver her potions!  But there’s a problem… the potions are fragile, and the monster’s bumpy journey could make them break! Your students will design and build a potion protector that will help the monster safely transport a potion from the witch’s shop to her customers.

To try this challenge with materials you already have, give each group a small container or “potion” to protect along with a selection of building materials (cardboard, paper, tape, cotton balls, etc.). Challenge students to design a protective package that keeps the potion safe when it is bumped, dropped, or otherwise tested.

A few things students will need to think about while designing their potion protector include: How can they keep the potion from breaking? What materials can absorb an impact? How can they keep the container strong? How much room does the potion need? Which materials will provide the most protection? Your students may have very different ideas about how to build their potion protector… and that’s part of what makes the challenge interesting!

This challenge is also especially good for demonstrating why testing matters in engineering.  Students may discover that the potion moves around too much inside the container, their cushioning doesn’t absorb the impact, or the design protects the bottle in one direction but not the other.  I like to remind students that a design that doesn’t work the first time isn’t a failure, it’s information that helps engineers improve their next design.

Zombie Delivery Vehicle STEM Challenge

Our monster friend has one more challenge: he’s been hired to deliver supplies across the graveyard! There’s just one problem… the road is full of bumps, rocks, and obstacles. The monster needs a vehicle that can safely carry its supplies to their destination! 

 
 

In this final STEM challenge, your students will design and build a delivery vehicle that will help the monster transport supplies across a bumpy graveyard. The vehicle needs to transport a small load from one location to another, and move successfully while carrying its cargo.

You don’t need anything fancy to get started. Give students a selection of building materials (cardboard, craft sticks, straw, tape, paper cups, bottle caps, etc.) and challenge them to create a vehicle that can carry some cargo from one point to another.

As students design their vehicle, they should think about how the vehicle will move, what size and type of wheels might work best, how the wheels will attach and turn, how they can keep the vehicle from tipping, how they will carry the supplies, and what might make the vehicle move more easily.

And their first design may not work perfectly!  Their vehicle might not move at all, it might turn instead of traveling straight, or it might tip over.  Remind students to test their vehicle, identify any problems, make changes, and test again.

Tips for Making these STEM Challenges Run Smoothly

Tip #1: Keep the materials simple.

You don’t need a giant collection of specialty STEM materials for any of these challenges.  Work with what you have!  Things like cardboard, craft sticks, paper, straws, tape, cups, bottle caps, cotton balls, and recycled materials are all you need.  In fact, limiting the materials students have to work with can make the challenge even more interesting!

Tip #2: Let students work in small groups.

I’ve found that smaller groups work really well for these activities. 2-4 students per group is a good size and makes it easy enough for everyone to have a job and actually participate.

Tip #3: Give students a clear problem, but don’t give them a solution.

Resist the urge to demonstrate what the finished product should look like!  You want to tell students something like, “Here’s the problem.  Here’s what your design has to accomplish.  Now figure out how you’re going to solve it.” And yes, it’s okay if they struggle a little!

Tip #4: Build in time for testing and redesign.

Try not to plan your STEM challenge so tightly that students only have time to build once. Students learning how to respond when their design fails is one of the most valuable parts of the activity!

Tip #5: Decide ahead of time how you’ll test the designs.

Think about the specifics. For example:

  • Where will students start and finish?

  • How far does the vehicle need to travel?

  • How will you test whether the bridge holds?

  • What will you use as the “potion”?

  • What happens if a design doesn’t meet the challenge?

Having these things figured out before students begin makes the activity run much smoother!

Tip #6: Don’t worry if the designs don’t work perfectly.

If half the designs don’t work… well, that’s kind of the point!  STEM challenges are meant to help students notice problems, think about why something didn’t work, make changes, and try again.
